WINSTON-SALEM, NC-Mrs. Nona Jessup Dyson, 80, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center. Nona was born on October 21, 1934 in Surry County, NC to the late Luther A. and Alice King Jessup. She graduated from Westfield High School in 1952 and later moved to Winston-Salem, NC where she met and then married her husband Ted Junior Dyson in 1965. Nona worked for Thalhimers Department Store and then Kroger Grocery Store for over 30 years before retiring with the United Food Workers Union in 1994. Nona was a devoted wife to Ted, her husband of nearly 50 years; a giving and loving mother to her only daughter, Commander Teddie Lois Dyson, U.S. Navy (Ret.) of Alexandria, VA; and a loyal and caring sister to her four siblings. Throughout her life, Nona devoted her time and energy to her home and family. Despite the demands of her job and raising a daughter, she was the consummate provider of home and hearth; the house was always spotless, dinners were prepared with care, and the clothing meticulously ironed and laundered. In her retirement years, she became a wonderful baker, a fantastic gardener, and a friendly and loyal neighbor to those in her community. She never forgot a birthday or special occasion and provided care for her mother-in-law, Lois Smith in her late years. Before her health declined, Nona enjoyed traveling to far-away places to visit her daughter at U.S. Navy postings and would unfailingly clean the house, shop for groceries, and tend the garden. Her persistence, work ethic and loving care inspired her daughter to work hard to pursue her dreams yet remain true and grounded in life. She always put her daughter first and was her fiercest and most loyal and loving supporter. She was a remarkable woman and gave so much so that her husband and daughter could have more. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Juanita ""Nita"" Davis and Marie Wolfe. She is survived by her husband, Ted Dyson; one daughter, Teddie Dyson; two sisters, Sarah Collins of Mount Airy, NC and Nina Reeves of Pilot Mountain, NC; and six nieces and nephews, their spouses and children. A funeral service will be held in Nona's honor at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Tim Davis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family requests flowers or donations to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718 in memory of Nona's sister, Nita Davis. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
