Nick Carros

Nick Carros, our beloved father, grandfather and husband passed away in his home September 18th, 2024, at the age of 87.

He was born on February 15th, 1937, in Papparousi, Evrytania, Greece. He was the son of Rena Cortessis Carros and Demetrios (Karagounis) Carros.

Nick Immigrated to the United States at the age of 12 after the civil war in Greece in 1949. Nick graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and lived the remainder of his life in Winston Salem, NC. He married Xanthi Tsoumas on September 7th, 1958, and they raised three children: Jimmy, Irene and Tammy. They remember their father as a devoted and loving parent, teaching them the values of hard work and integrity. He wanted to offer his kids the opportunities and exposure he didn’t have. “Follow your hearts and dreams”, he often said.

Professionally, Nick successfully co-owned and managed Mr. Barbecue, a landmark restaurant in Winston Salem since 1963. Nick was known to his friends as an avid golfer who enjoyed his weekly golf group. He was considered the “master of all who tinkers” always fixing and repairing anything broken. He was always ready to help friends and family with projects or repairs. His affection for European cars brought about a lifelong restoration hobby, a testament to his passion and talent. Nick was passionate about coaching youth basketball with the GOYA team. During his time off, he loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed the hours spent in his backyard in nature with the animals that he adored. Nick was known for his kindness, philosophical mind, and love to serve others.

Nick was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Carros; his sister, Vasiliki Carros; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Xanthi (Cynthia) Carros; son, Jimmy Carros and wife, Ashley; daughter, Irene Carros and husband, Dr. Joseph Jorizzo; daughter, Tammy Hargitay and husband, Mickey; brother Gus D. Carros and wife, Emily; grandchildren, Nicholas Carros, Ethan Carros, John Jorizzo and wife, Victoria, Michael Jorizzo and wife, Amanda, Melina Jorizzo, and Eva Hargitay; great grandchildren, Jack and Lucas Jorizzo; sister in-law, Helen Tsiolkas; and extended family.

Nick leaves a legacy of family values and a strong work commitment. The family remembers how much he enjoyed mentoring the youth in his community and was always prepared to give a philosophical lecture.
