Mr. Nelson Reed Joyce, 85, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home December 1, 2009. He was born November 7, 1924 , the son of the late Charlie and Edna Turner Joyce. Met and married Betty Lou McGee while attending the University of Wisconsin. They were married for 65 years. Of this union were two children , son Jon Reed and daughter Judith Ann. Mr. Joyce served in the US Air Force as a Navigator on B-29 bombers and reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He served in both World War II and the Korean War receiving an Air Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Cluster to Air Medal and the Korean Service Medal. After serving in the military, he went to work for Schlitz Brewery in California and thereafter retired from Stroh Brewery, Winston-Salem, NC as master brewer. During his career, he worked at plants in California, Wisconsin, Hawaii and North Carolina. He enjoyed family camping trips to such locations as Yellowstone, Mammoth Lakes, Tetons, Bishop Creek, Lake Tahoe. His children learned many life lessons and other important simple things like how to work windshield wipers manually in a snowstorm. He loved people and never met a stranger. After retirement, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed working in his garden and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jon Reed Joyce, two sisters Dellie and Evadale and two brothers, Billy and Clyde. Survivors include his wife of 65 years Betty McGee Joyce of the home; one daughter, Judy Dahl of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Jennifer Craven and husband, James of Enid, Oklahoma; two grandsons, Joey Dahl and wife, Anna of Monroe and Jeff Joyce and wife, Tania of Winston-Salem; eight great grandchildren, Cameron, Ty, Jarod, of Monroe and James, Austin, Johnathan, Logan and Dallas all of Enid, Oklahoma. Also surviving are five sisters Doris, Mabel, Betty, Tiney and Belvie, brothers-in-law Ernest and William all of Bassett, VA.;sister-in-law Nancy of Wadsworth, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Jim McGee and wife, Marion and Harold Halstenburg and wife, Nancy of CA and sister-in-law, Delores Grauer of Iowa. In addition to his faithful dog Julie, there are also many more relatives and friends. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A military graveside service will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:45 PM at the funeral home.
