Nellie Foster Childress

Mrs. Nellie Foster Childress, 93, of Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, September 11, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on July 13, 1922 in Erlanger, to Pearl Todd and Richard Foster. Mrs. Childress grew up in the South Fork area. She graduated from Old City Hospital Nursing School and worked at the hospital, as a private duty nurse and finally Western Electric until her retirement in 1984. Mrs. Childress married Odell L.C. Childress on June 6, 1944. She was a member of Konnoak Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served on many committees. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Austin P. Fortney, her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Jack Flynt, and her brother Tommy Foster. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Childress of Clinton, N.J.; sister-in-law, Peggy Foster of Mocksville, and several nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 with Rev. John Bishop officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:15 PM until 2:00 PM Tuesday at the church.
