Nell Dalton Barnard

Mrs. Nellie Dalton Barnard of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, April 04, 2010 at her home. Born July 21, 1929, she was the daughter of Willie Isham and Mattie Hill Dalton and grew up on a tobacco farm in northern Stokes County, the State Line Community, bordering on the state of Virginia. After graduating from Francisco High School as Valedictorian of the 1947 class, she attended Draughan Business College in Winston-Salem and worked at the Anchor Company until her marriage to James Bryant Barnard in December of 1950. After returning to Winston-Salem, she worked for Integon Corporation (formerly Security Life & Trust Company) for more than 36 years, retiring in 1989. She was a longtime member of Clemmons First Baptist Church, the Sanctuary Choir and Senior Choir, the JOY Club and various committees. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Clemmons Chapter No. 373, and Past Worthy Matron and District Deputy Grand Matron of the 17th District. Nell was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, W. Glenn Dalton and P. Lester Dalton and sisters, Marie D. Lawson and Ruth D. Jessup. Surviving are her loving husband James of 59 years; sisters, Mary Lou D. Hutchins of King, Rachel D. Pike and Bernice D. Anderson of Winston-Salem; also surviving are a number of very special nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday April 7, 2010 at Clemmons First Baptist Church with Dr. Robby Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. Memorials may be made to Clemmons First Baptist Church Senior Choir, 3530 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012.
