Nannie Johnson

"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" (II Corinthians 5:8). Nannie Swaim Johnson went to be with the Lord on February 9, 2018. Nannie was born on August 5, 1921 in Yadkin County to Columbus and Fannie Holcomb Swaim. One of eleven children, Nannie grew up working on the farm assisting with all the farm duties. This strong work ethic continued throughout all her life as she worked at RJ Reynolds and after her children were in school she worked at Krispy Kreme. When her neighbors, Robert and Betty Burcham, opened the Chuck Wagon II restaurant on Reynolda Road, Nannie went to work for them where she remained until the doors of the restaurant closed. When she wasn't working, she was cooking and baking cakes and pies for anyone who needed them. The things Nannie loved most in this world were investing time and money on her grandchildren. She never needed a special occasion to "run away" for the day with them. Our family has so many wonderful memories of our time spent together. Delicious Sunday dinners were frequently enjoyed as well as those special gatherings for birthdays, Thanksgivings, and especially Christmas celebrations. Nannie was married to Franklin Johnson in 1943 and they were blessed with 55 years together until his home going in 1997. She was preceded in death by her daughter Carol Jean Robertson in 2012 and a special nephew James Stoneman in 2017. She is survived by her son Rev. Randy Johnson and his wife of Clemmons. Also, surviving are her grandchildren Mitch Robertson of Tobaccoville, Amy (Phil) Grande of Clemmons, and Jonathan (Beth) Johnson of Winston-Salem and great-grandchildren Tyler, Ryan, and Ashley Grande and Silas Johnson. In addition she is survived by her sisters Sadie Weavil, Mary Lee Swaim, Janette Stoneman, son-in-law Elisha Robertson as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her "adopted daughter" Jane Bodenhamer. A celebration of Nannie's life will be held at Hayworth-Miller in Lewisville on Tuesday evening February 13 at 6:30 PM. The service will be conducted by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Visitation will follow the service. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, February 14 at 11:00 AM at Forsyth Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem. The family says a special "thank you" to the staff at Trinity Elms and Hospice for their compassionate care.
