Winston-Salem- Nancy Lucille Lawhern, 67, passed away November 22, 2011 at her residence. Nancy was born February 5, 1944 in the mountains of North Carolina near Burnsville, daughter of Jesse and Ruth Ray Lawhern. In her teens, she relocated to Asheville, working in a furniture store and developing her natural skills for display and design. She set her sights on Winston-Salem and applied for a job at Bo-Ty Florist, having worked during her teens in Bank's Florist in Burnsville. Anna Dawson hired her and she became a valuable employee and close family friend to Anna and Colin. Her natural talents led her to eventually purchase Wilson's Flower Shop in Clemmons in October 1984 and she proved to be an astute business woman, well liked by her employees and clients. She never met a stranger and kept many friends in the florist industry as well as life-long golfing friends. Nancy was President of the N.C. State Florist association in 1999 and after selling her florist shop, worked in the business in various ways, including Lihmil, Inc., a local wholesale florist supplier. In 2006 she was awarded the Wholesaler of the Year award by the NCSFA. Through the years, she served on many committees and boards of the Winston-Salem Florist Association as well as NCSFA. At the 2011 convention in August she was given Honorary Life Membership in the state association. Nancy is survived by her brother, Jim Lawhern and wife Brenda and leaves behind many friends that helped to care for her in her last days including Bobby Adkins, Becky Edwards, and Randy Jenkins. She was fiercely independent all her life and was admired for her sense of humor, quick wit, and multiple talents. A Celebration of Nancy's life will be held from 3:00pm until 6:00pm, Sunday, December 18, 2011 at Bermuda Run Country Club in Advance, NC.
