Nancy Elizabeth Miner Herb

Nancy Elizabeth Miner Herb went to be with the Lord on May 4, 2013. Nancy was born in Springville, Utah on April 5, 1923, the fifth of seven children born to Thorn and Selina Miner. The family moved to Philadelphia when Nancy was five years old. She graduated in 1944 as valedictorian from Springfield Township High School in Erdenheim, Pennsylvania. She returned to Utah and graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Bacteriology. She married her high school sweetheart, Rev. Dr. Donald W. Herb, on August 26, 1944. Nancy began her professional career in research at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Upon relocating to Great Lakes, Illinois, she was employed at Abbott Labs, also as a research analyst. Further relocations led to subsequent employment at Tompkins Hall School of Columbia University in New York City; The School of Public Health at University of North Carolina, once again in research; Gettysburg College, where she was a biology lab instructor, and ultimately, fifteen years as a librarian at Hofstra University on Long Island, New York. Nancy and Don, married for 68 years at the time of her death, had three children: Sandra, Paul, and Peter, and grandsons Joseph Morris II and Ransom S. Averitt III. She was predeceased by her parents and all but one of her siblings. Her youngest sister and dearest friend, Evelyn Miner Ekins, survives. Nancy leaves behind her husband, Rev. Dr. Donald W. Herb and her children Sandra (Ransom, Jr.) Averitt, Paul (Joanne) and Peter (Cindy) Herb, and grandchildren Joseph (Susan) Morris II and Ransom S. III (Dayna) Averitt. The family will receive visitors Monday evening from 7-9 pm. at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Rural Hall with burial following in the church cemetery. The family would like to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Kate B. Reynolds Palliative Care Center for their compassion, sensitivity, and the good care they provided, and to her team at Wake Forest Baptist Health, especially Dr. Sommerville.
