Nancy Whitaker Bull, 82, went home to be with her Lord on January 16, 2018 after a brief and unexpected illness. Her last hours were peacefully spent with loving family by her side. Nancy was born on July 22, 1935 to Claude Ray and Josephine Covington Whitaker of Winston-Salem. She graduated from John W. Hanes High School in 1953 and following graduation, she attended NC Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. She met her future husband Reece Alan Bull while standing outside the Carolina Theatre waiting for the late show and the two were inseparable during their 63 years of marriage. She worked briefly at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company prior to starting her family. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother as witnessed by her extensive collection of pictures of them all. Nancy grew up at Home Moravian Church, and then attended Reynolda Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed serving in Vacation Bible School and the Tape Library. Most recently, she was active member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Hinson Bible Study Class. She was also a member of the Red Hat Club. She is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved daughter, Deborah Lynn Messick, and brother-in-law, Carlos DeVan Bull. She leaves behind her husband, Reece "Alan" Bull; her daughter, Beth Thetford Crossmon (Jason); her son, Stephen Alan Bull; 8 amazing grandchildren: Alisa Messick Marsch (Joseph), Andrea Messick Harrelson (Adam), Andrew Messick (Alicia Rogers), William Thetford (Dana), Daniel Thetford, David Thetford, Austin Bull, and Emily Bull; 6 adorable great-grandchildren: Lydia Marsch, Aubrey Marsch, Noah Harrelson, Carter Harrelson, and Owen Harrelson, and Russell Messick; 4 devoted nieces and nephews: John Eric Bull, Carlos Devan Bull (Sara), Sheila Hasenstab (Bob), and Tracy Tesh; 3 brothers and sisters-in-law: Gayle Compton (Robert), Beverly Jo "Sharon" Bull, and Carole Padgett Bull; and son-in-law, Bill Messick (Debby) and many loved ones and friends. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 26, 6- 8 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home (3315 Silas Creek Parkway). A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 27 at 12:30 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church (5000 Country Club Road) with Pastor Gary Byrum officiating.
