Mrs. Joan Williams Vernon, 78 of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 11, 1933 in Fort Worth,Texas to Tom Williams and Barbara Moon. Mrs. Vernon was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and had retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was one of the first female rural route carriers in Forsyth County. Her parents and husband, Paul Milburn Vernon and two sons, Paul Milburn Vernon, Jr. and David Kent Vernon preceded her in death. Surviving are a grandson, Donald Paul Vernon of Greensboro; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Edmondson ""Betsy"" Vernon of Pfafftown; a brother-in-law, John W. Vernon and wife Helen of Rural Hall; a sister-in-law, Nan P. Vernon of Winston-Salem; two special people to Mrs. Vernon, Becky and Wayne Choplin as well as a host of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons and a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5:00 PM Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Faith United Methodist Church in Rural Hall by Rev. Drew Southern and Rev. Scott Vernon. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, Open Heart Open, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Faith United Methodist Church Relay for Life Fund, 1645 Griffin Rd.
