Mrs. Alta Lou McDaniel Kimmons, 91 of Winston Salem, N.C. died Monday, January 2, 2012 at Marjorie P. Lee Nursing Home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Saturday, January 7 at 1:00 PM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home of Winston-Salem is in charge of arrangements. Alta was born October 20, 1920 in Texico, New Mexico to Willie and Annie Luchsinger McDaniel. She graduated from the Texico High School, salutatorian of her senior class and a record of perfect attendance for 12 years. She won numerous 4-H awards during her school years, representing the state of New Mexico at the 1938 National 4-H conference in Chicago, Ill. She studied home economics at New Mexico State College. While in college she met and married Lee H. Kimmons of Ft. Summer, New Mexico in 1942. Lee and Alta had three children, Leroy Charles, Max Dewayne and Linda Lou. Lee Kimmons preceded her in death in 1979. Her oldest son, Leroy Kimmons died in 2009. Mrs. Kimmons was a lifelong member of the Nazarene Church. In New Mexico, she was a member of the Las Cruses, First Church of the Nazarene from 1949-1952. When the family moved to North Carolina in 1952, Alta became an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Winston-Salem. She served as the church treasurer for 35 years. She also served many years as a Sunday school teacher, Missionary President, and Vacation Bible School Director. She attended the North Carolina Nazarene District Assembly every year for 50 years. Her professional career included working as a typist at White Sands Proving Grounds Missile Range in Alamogordo, New Mexico from 1949-1953. She became a typist for Western Electric in 1965 and retired in 1986. During her retirement, she continued her church work and assisted many people within the church community who were in need of food, financial help, transportation, and prayer. She loved to work in her garden and shared many summer vegetables with friends and neighbors. In 2006 after the death of her son-in-law, Stephen Wulff, she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to be near her daughter Linda and grandchildren. In December, 2010 with her grandson, Stefan Densmore pushing her in an adult jogging stroller, she participated in the Cincinnati Jingle Bell Run/Walk to benefit the Arthritis Foundation, earning 1st place for participants in the age 90 and above category. Alta Kimmons is survived by her son, Max Kimmons of Sunnyvale, California, her daughter, Linda Kimmons Wulff (Eric Neitzke) of Cincinnati, Ohio, her grandson, Stefan Densmore (Heidi Densmore) two granddaughters Eileen Wulff and Whitney Wulff Young (Matthew Young) and two great-granddaughters, Addison Young and namesake, Alta Rose Densmore, all of Cincinnati. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Jan Kimmons of Beaumont, Texas and sister-in-law Lela Lloyd of Newtown, Pa. She leaves many loving nieces, nephews, neighbors, colleagues and friends. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
