- James Harry McGrath passed away peacefully on July 4, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born September 27, 1917 in Dauphin County to the late Edward and Jeanie McGrath. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his five brothers; Ed, George, Hugh, John and Tom and three sisters, Agnes, Barbara, and Jean. He grew up in Harrisburg and graduated from John Harris High School. On November 29, 1947 he married Catherine Class. During World War II he served his country as Army Counter Intelligence assigned to the 11th Airborne in the Pacific and was with General Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo on V-J Day. After completing his service to his country, he continued a business career with Bethlehem Steel Company, where he worked for 40 years as an accountant. He retired in 1976. He was an active member of 4th UCC church. Jim and Catherine later became active members of St. Thomas's Church. He loved his family, his friends and traveling. He never met a stranger and gave his love freely through kind words and actions and always made time to visit shut-ins. He enjoyed reading, was an avid gardener, and enjoyed the outdoors, the stock market, and traveling. Jim and his wife Catherine traveled to Europe several times, the Caribbean and traveled to all but two of the states in the US several times over a twenty-plus year period. He loved and enjoyed his family and his grandchildren and shared in all their special interest. Those who knew him and loved him are glad he was part of their lives. Jim will be fondly missed and remembered as a caring man with a wonderful sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Catherine; a son, Harry and wife Sharon of Clemmons; a granddaughter, Jenn Manning and husband Paul of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Alex McGrath and wife Jennifer of Winston-Salem; six great-grandchildren, P.J., Caleb, Zoe, Mya, Allison, and Lily. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity. A graveside service and Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Veterans Cemetery, PA.
