Mr. Bruce Edward Tarkington, 91, of Winston-Salem passed away December 8, 2012 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 6, 1921 in Belhaven to Ulmont Wilson and Lena Spivey Tarkington. After serving in the the South Pacific in The US Navy during World War II as a SeaBee decoding messages and working with James A.Michener on War Histories subsequent to the Japanese surrender, he graduated from Wake Forest College and earned his Masters of Education at East Carolina. His professional career began as a teacher at Belhaven High School before serving as the principal of the public schools in Smyrna and Beaufort, N.C for a combined nine years. He then went on to Mineral Springs Elementary and Junior High in Winston-Salem where he served as principal for a combined twenty-four years until retiring in 1983. He loved his family, his teachers, and his students as well as trying to bring joy into everyone`s life he touched. He is predeceased by his wife of sixty-five years, Marion Lowe Tarkington. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer Tarkington of Gastonia, his son Dr. Bruce Tarkington and daughter-in-law Beth of Cary, his granddaughters Amy Lowe Carpenter of Charlotte, Patrice Dyckes and son-in-law Jason Dyckes of Charlotte, grandson Benjamin Tarkington of High Point and great-grandchildren Parker and Jacob Dyckes of Charlotte. A memorial service will be held 4:00 p.m. Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Cecil Cave officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
