Mildred Henley Merritt

Mildred Henley Merritt went to be with Jesus Sunday evening, November 15th at her home in Winston-Salem. She is survived in loving memory by her two sons, Robert Joel ‘Bob' Merritt (and his wife Ruth) of Wilmington, NC and James Richard ‘Jim' Merritt (and his wife Jennifer) of Lexington, NC. She married the love of her life, Harvey ‘Joel' Merritt, Jr. in 1944 who preceded her in death in 1999. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Lara Michele Merritt Maxwell (husband Brian) of Durham, NC; Amy Catherine Merritt Griffiths (husband Matt) of Wilmington, NC; and Robert Joel Merritt, Jr. (wife Alice) of Raleigh, NC; and six greatgrandchildren, Emily Maxwell, Nolan Maxwell, Zachary Griffiths, Finley Griffiths, Addisyn Merritt, and Robert Joel Merritt, III. She will also be profoundly missed by Jim's stepchildren, Thomas Michael Joyce (wife Jennifer) and Laura Joyce Hefner (husband Trenton) and her son Douglas ‘Wade' Hefner. She was born on August 31, 1922 in Statesville, NC but lived most of her life in Winston-Salem, graduating from Reynolds High School. She was the last of seven children of Chill and Mary Henley. Those who knew ‘Mildred' understood that she was a true ‘southern lady' with unbounded energy and was totally dedicated to her family. She routinely spent her Sunday afternoons visiting the ‘home-bound' members of First Baptist Church and was known in the family for her wonderful cakes and pies. A Celebration of Mildred's life will be held at 2:00PM Saturday, November 21st at the First Baptist Church at 501 West 5th Street, Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive friends in the Brown Room prior to the service. Interment at Forsyth Memorial Park will follow immediately afterward. The family will receive friends on Friday evening November 20th from 7 to 9pm at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
