Mildred Sunderlin Gorham

Mildred Salmons Sunderlin Gorham, 89, of Winston-Salem passed away on May 24, 2014 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born August 1, 1924 in Yadkin County to George Franklin and Pearl Williams Salmons. After moving to Winston-Salem, she attended James A. Gray High School and for a short period of time worked at Hanes Knitting Mill. She began working at RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company and continued for 40 years until her retirement. She was actively involved in the General Federation of Women's Club, Old Town Women's Club, Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 55, holding various offices and serving on numerous committees. She also enjoyed working at the polls during elections. Mildred was a longtime member of Bethania Moravian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Alvin Sunderlin and Allyn Gorham, her daughter, Frances Eugenia Sunderlin, two sisters, Nonnie Groce and Leatha Howard and two brothers, Jack Salmons and James Salmons, Sr. Surviving are her grandsons, Jerome Brooks Person of Greenville, N.C. and Brian Alan Person of Winston-Salem. Also two sisters Carrol Knight of Walnut Cove, N.C. and Kathleen Patterson of Winston-Salem; two stepsons, Gary (Sherri) Gorham of Matthews, N.C. and Kevin Gorham of Cramerton, N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will celebrate Mildred's life with a memorial service at 2:00 PM Monday at Bethania Moravian Church in Bethania, N.C. with Rev. Russ May officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethania Moravian Church, PO Box 170, Bethania, N.C. 27010 or to Hospice and Palliative Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27127.The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Forest Heights Senior Living for their kindness and care given to Mildred.
