Michael Wayne Long passed away on August 28, 2023, in Winston-Salem. He was born on September 26, 1947, in Monroe, North Carolina. Professionally, he was known as “Mike,” but to family and close friends, he was “Mick” or “Mickey.”
A proud veteran, Mike served in the United States Marines during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he attended High Point College where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in accounting. Mike would go on to become an accountant where he would be in practice for 50 years, working at First Citizen’s Bank, Piedmont Airlines, US Airways, and his own practice.
A true family man, Mike loved his children and grandchildren unconditionally. In his earlier years, he loved tinkering with cars and was a member of the Corvette Club in the early 1970’s. An avid golfer, he also played church softball and was a mainstay at his children’s many sporting events, as well as enjoying family vacations all around the country. In his later years, he looked forward to family beach trips, grandchildren’s sporting events, and spending time with his wife and three pugs. Mike was also a dedicated member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winston Salem, NC.
Mike was preceded in death by both parents, William and Betty Long; his brother Robert Long; and his sisters, Pat Thomas and Janet Boyles.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 55 years, Ann Reese Long; his three children Paige Beckner (Todd), Brian Long (Jessica), Whitney Ellis (Dave); six adored grandchildren Garrett, Sydney, Tyler, Zach, Ella, and Hunter; one sister Mary Isaacs (Jerry); one brother Tommy Long (Libby); his three beloved dogs Dory, Bluey, and Pumpkin; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
To bid farewell and commemorate Mike's life, visitation services will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023 from 5PM-7PM, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. On September 2, 2023, a graveside service will be held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Winston-Salem at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Pug Rescue of North Carolina.
