Michael Cumbie

Michael “Mike” Hampton Cumbie, 82, of Germanton, NC went to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, Friday July 22, 2022, with his daughters by his side.  Mike was born March 9, 1940 in Winston Salem, NC to the late Michael Hill Cumbie and Jessie Hampton Cumbie. He proudly served in the US Army and the US Army Reserves.  He worked at R.J. Reynolds Archer division for over three decades. During those years, and as long as his health permitted, he worked weekends at gun and knife shows and flea markets including Cook’s in Winston Salem and the annual Labor Day Flea Market in Hillsville, VA.  Mike was humble, generous, and hard working. He was an excellent teacher and provider for his daughters.  Retirement gave Mike opportunities to volunteer at the Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston Salem, American Legion Post 290, Stokes County Fair and Yester Year Village of the Dixie (Carolina) Classic Fair.  Mike was a steadfast defender of the 2nd Amendment and US history preservation. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, National SCV, NC SCV, NC Gun Collectors Association, National Knife Association and was NC Lifetime Sportsman.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Lee Cumbie, and Brother-in-law, Luther “Junior” Vernon Apperson.  He is survived by his loving daughters, Sarah-Anne (Tim) Mikles, Laura (Gary) Woods; Grandchildren, Rachel Woods, Bethany Woods, and SPC Leon Mikles; Great Grandchildren Emma-lea, Jarvis, and Marcus; Sister Betty Cumbie Apperson, and several nephews and a niece. The Family wishes to thank Mike's friends Jamie Simmons and Rodney Shallow for their support, compassion and care over the years.  A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Red Bank Missionary Baptist Church with Tim Mikles officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, or Trellis Supportive Care.  Military Rites will be provided by the American Legion Post 290, King NC.  Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
