Mrs. Mercedes H. Freeman of Salemtowne Moravian Retirement Home died Wednesday, February 11, 2009. Mercedes Alice Hugunin Mehlen Freeman was born to Chester and Marie Hugrinin in Antigo, Wisconsin on August 25, 1916. She graduated from the Antigo High School and the University of Wisconsin. She married Harold R. Mehlen in 1943, she taught high school English in several cities in Wisconsin and in St. Paul, Minnesota, before coming to Winston-Salem in 1958 with her family. Harold Mehlen passed away in 1964 while employed by Western Electric and AT&T. She continued to teach at various high schools in Winston-Salem, mainly at Gray until it closed and Parkland until her retirement. She married Kermit A. Freeman in 1969 and he passed away in 1996. Her many interests and hobbies made for an active and rewarding life, these revolved around her family, many friends, church, sports, travel, bridge, reading, scrabble, crafts, ballroom dancing, piano and organ playing, for there was not enough hours in a day. She held numerous offices in churches and organizations, such as Eastern Star, The Rebekkas, three ballroom dancing clubs, Fairview Moravian Church and Salemtowne. Four children survive, Ron Mehlen of Pfafftown, Sharol Mehlen Mathis of Roscommon, Michigan, Mark N. Mehlen of San Antonio, Texas and David Mehlen of Fairfield, Iowa; two step children, Frances Freeman Hill and Steve Freeman of Charlotte; a sister, Phyllis Graves of Santa Ana, California and sister-in-law, Lily Brovald of St. Paul, Minnesota; a brother, Richard Hugunin. She also leaves five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She touched many lives and will be missed by friends across the country. She always said ""My life is one glad hello and sad goodbye."" She moved to Salemtowne Moravian Retirement home in 1997. A memorial service will be held 11:00AM Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Salemtowne Moravian Retirement Home with Pastor Riddick Weber officiating.
