Melvin Douglas 'Doug' Payne

Mr. Melvin Douglas ""Doug"" Payne, 69, passed away Tuesday May 14, 2013 at Davie County Hospital in Mocksville. He was born in Surry Co. on November 2, 1943 the son of the late Elmer Lee Payne and Cindy Marie Butcher Payne. Doug graduated from John Nichols High School at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a retired tobacco farmer and loved to read. Doug was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by three sisters, Brenda Perry (Larry) of Orange City, FL, Gale Watson (Wallace) of Ararat, NC and Linda Kocis (Ron) of Edgewood, MD, two brothers, Don Payne (JoAnn) of Mt. Airy and Roger Dale Payne (Gloria) of Ararat, VA and several nieces and nephews. Doug is also survived by his special friends, Hassell and Nancy Watson, Adam Watson, Brandy Cantebury family, Barbara Ann Goins, George Braddock and Jimmy Rivers. A private graveside service for Doug will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to; Masonic Home for Children Cemetery Fund, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.
