Our wonderful mother, Maxine Couch Hill, passed away at the age of 91 on December 14, 2023. She was born in Elkin, NC on May 19,1932 to the late Milas Monroe Couch and Jossie Day Couch. Maxine graduated from Elkin High School and began her career as a secretary working in New York City and later Western Electric after moving to Winston-Salem. She held various secretarial positions at Piedmont Airlines, retiring from there after 21 years of service as the Administrative Assistant to the President.
Maxine was a longtime and faithful member of Konnoak Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for many years, served as assistant treasurer, and worked on various committees and organizations within the church. She loved her church and was an exemplary example of a true Christian woman. Maxine was an excellent cook, especially her desserts of banana pudding, chocolate pie, and hummingbird cake. She always said to find a little joy in something every day and she did, whether it was admiring beautiful flowers or watching a hummingbird come to her feeder. Her day never started without a good cup of coffee. She once said she wanted to be remembered for two things, that she cared for others and that she had a great sense of humor. She could always make you laugh at something funny she had said with her uncanny wit. Most of all, Maxine loved spending time with her family. She especially loved to crochet blankets for the arrival of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, James Howard Hill, Sr; three sisters, Mae Couch, Beulah Wiles (Stacy), and Eva Lou Campbell (John); one brother, Ancle Couch (Mozelle). Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Donna Bragg and husband Nick of Winston-Salem, NC and Angela Paschal and husband Mark of Charlottesville, VA; one son, Jim Hill, Jr and wife Susie of Lexington, NC; four grandsons, Justin Hill of Lexington, NC, Joshua Hill and wife Sarah of Cherry Hill, NJ, Isaac Paschal and wife Christine of Powhatan, VA, and Malachi Paschal of Charlottesville, VA; two granddaughters, Leah Larsen and husband Michael of Richmond, VA and Taylor Bragg of Durham, NC; two great granddaughters, Poppy and Juniper Larsen; three great grandsons, Holden and Graham Hill who called her "Gigi" and Lane Paschal; several nieces and nephews; her best friend, known affectionately as her BFF, Brenda Daniels and husband, Steve; her two feline companions, Angel and Baby; plus many friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Rev. John Bishop officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Susie Hill, Jenny Anders, Valette Byrd, Juanita Cunningham, and the staff of Medi Home Health Agency for their loving care of our mother. She will be sorely missed by many.
