Mavis Jividen Hedrick passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
Mavis was born May 25, 1932, in Mason County, WV. At the age of nine, the family moved to Nitro, WV in Kanawha County. She grew up there and after graduating from high school in 1950, she went to work for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Charleston. She met her husband Charles at a drive-in restaurant in early 1952. They began to talk to each other, and he asked her out for a date. She thought he looked like an okay guy and consented to go out with him. They continued to date for about six months. He then asked her to marry him. Long engagements were not the norm back then, so they set a date for November 26, 1952, to be married. Two little girls were born of this marriage. Mavis quit her job at Metropolitan to raise their daughters. Then in 1968, Charles was asked to transfer with Gravely to Clemmons, NC. He and Mavis talked this over and decided to move to Winston-Salem in 1968. They joined Forest Hill Baptist Church in 1969 where many friendships were made.
In 1972, Mavis was employed by Hunter Publishing Company as a typesetter. She enjoyed her work very much there, working on yearbooks from high schools and colleges throughout many states. She continued at Hunter for 19 years, retiring in December 1991. Mavis and Charles moved to the Ardmore area in 1994 and joined Ardmore United Methodist Church and the Christian Fellowship Class in 1996. They met many wonderful folks there that soon became friends.
Mavis was a loving and wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a wonderful cook and took food to friends and neighbors when she could. She loved having the family in especially for the holidays. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Brookridge Rehab for their loving care of Mavis leading up to her passing. Prior to Brookridge, Mavis enjoyed her two month stay at The Southwood.
In addition to her parents (Hollie and Zelma), Mavis was preceded in death by her husband Charles and siblings Darlena, Leona, Jean, Wilbur, and Thurman. Mavis is survived by daughters Linda Stokes and Lou Ann (Dale) Dial and their daughter Rebecca (Zack), and their daughter Greer.
A funeral service will be held 12:00 PM Friday, January 10, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Silas Creek Chapel. A private burial will take place following the service.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Ardmore United Methodist Church at 630 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Online condolences may be posted to www.hayworth-miller.com
