Mr. Maurice William Werner, Sr., 75, of Winston-Salem died peacefully Monday, August 8, 2011 at his home. He was born October 22, 1935 in the family home near Fidelity, KS. to Martin and Mary Grewing Werner. He was known for his generosity, his dependability and his simple direct approach to life. He had a strong work ethic and loved his family and friends. Mr. Werner was a retired Master Sergeant with the US Air Force following 21 years of service. Following his retirement from the Air Force he worked for Varco-Pruden retiring with 15 years of service. He was an active member of American Legion Post #55 of Winston-Salem for many years and had served as Finance Officer and was instrumental in creating the American Legion Riders. He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include one daughter, Christine Werner Booher and husband, Lee of Elkin; one son, Maurice William Werner, II and wife, Ginger of Mt. Airy; two grandchildren, Sierra and Sam Booher of Elkin; his mother, Mary Werner; one sister, Dolores Smith and husband, Gary; two brothers, Leo Werner and wife, Vickie and Tom Werner of KS; a number of nieces and nephews; and his former wife and mother of his children, Mae Werner of Dobson. A memorial service will service will be conducted Sunday, August 14, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Chaplain William Craven and Dr. Jeff Patterson officiating . The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to American Legion Post #55, 111 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
