Mattie Irene Whitener

Mattie Irene Whitener, also affectionately known as ""Boogie"" to many people, was born September 19, 1941, in Hickory, NC. She was greeted by her Maker on March 23, 2017, having lived at Trinity Elms in Clemmons, NC. Her service of celebration will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem, NC,
where she was a long-time member, on Saturday, April 1, 2017. A visitation will be held at 10:00 am and the funeral service will be at 11:00 am. The burial will take place in Hickory, NC at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens at 2:00pm. Irene was preceded in death by her mother, Mae Whitener, and her brother, James Brooks. She is survived by several godchildren and countless friends. Having graduated from St. Stephen's High School in Hickory (class of 1959), she earned her Practical Nursing Degree at Banner Elk, NC in 1961. Irene worked at NC Baptist Hospital for 40 years, retiring on September 1, 2007. Irene will truly be remembered for her strong faith and her joy of life.
