Mary Jo McKimmie passed away on February 3, 2023 at her home in Lewisville, North Carolina surrounded by family at the age of 78 following a short battle with ALS. She was born in Glen Dale, West Virginia on December 25, 1944, and was preceded in death by her parents Virginia and Chester Darrah, and a sister Lettie "Marlene" Wayt. She is survived by Emerson, her husband of 56 years, son Ryan (Ashley) McKimmie of Lewisville and three beloved grandchildren, Teagan, Connor, and Cassidy as well as two sisters, Carol Campbell of Moundsville, WV and Bonnie Moore of Glen Dale, WV, and many nieces and nephews. She was the secretary at Glen Dale Elementary School for many years and moved to North Carolina after retiring shortly before the birth of her first grandchild. She will be most remembered for her seemingly boundless love for family, her wonderful sense of humor, and her strong, independent spirit which was especially evident as she faced her illness. She and her family are especially grateful for the tireless in-home care provided by Crystal, Angel, and Nikki of Figjam Caregivers as well as her many hospice caregivers during her final months. A Baptist by faith, she will be interred at Forsyth Memorial Park. Visitation will occur on February 10, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel. Funeral services will be held at the same location on February 11, 2023, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, consideration could be given to donations to the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist ALS Clinic or to Trellis Supportive Care and Hospice of Winston-Salem, NC.
