GREENSBORO – Mrs. Mary Esther Hopkins Witcher, 80, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro. She was born to Mr. Jasper Elmo Hopkins and Mrs. Esther Baker Hopkins on August 30, 1944, in Patrick County, Virginia. Mary graduated from Guilford High School. She lived in many places, including Florida, Newfoundland, and Italy. In addition to being a dedicated wife and mother, she worked as a bank teller, customer service associate, waitress, and a kitchen manager. Mary’s pastimes included doing puzzles, playing Uno, vacationing at the beach, and enjoying time with her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her world. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her first husband, Roy William Burgin, Jr.; a son, Roy William (Billy) Burgin III; a daughter, Lisa Burgin Minter; a brother, Jasper Elmo (Bo) Hopkins Jr.; and a sister, Maxine Evangeline (Van) Weaver.
Left to carry on her memory are her husband of 48 years, Joseph Lindley Witcher; two sons, Scott Alan Burgin and Bryan Keith Witcher (Carli); five grandchildren, Sarah Burgin, Nathan Minter, Sierra Minter, Finley Witcher, and Oliver Witcher; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Sherrill Hopkins Haney; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service for Mary will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Pastor Jeff Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00am to 10:45am prior to the service.
