Mary Owen Kiger West

Mrs. Mary Owen Kiger West, 80 of Winston-Salem died peacefully in her sleep at home on Tuesday, June 15, 2010. She was born on October 27, 1929 in Pilot Mountain, NC to Rufus Arthur and Doris Owen Kiger. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Peggy Kiger Newsome, a grandson Travis Michael Jones, and a great-grandson Matthew Thomas Hunter. She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 63 years, Jonathan Leo West (J.L.) of the home; two sisters, Helen Patterson (Art) of Greensburg, PA and Karen Starling (Ron) of Winston-Salem; and five brothers, Clarence Kiger, Paul Kiger (Brigette), Bill Kiger (Carolyn), Thomas Kiger, and Edward Kiger all of Rural Hall. Mrs. West is survived by four daughters; Gaye Morgan of Lewisville, Patricia West of Clemmons, Sandra Roark (Darrell) of Clemmons, and Susan Jones (Michael) of Strongsville, OH; ten grandchildren, Stephanie Brasili (Sean), Katy Channel, Brian Spaugh (Angela), Brent Hunter, Melissa Stenson (David), Elizabeth Jordan, Jonathan Jordan, Abby Jones, Emily Jones and Christine Jones; and thirteen great-grandchildren, Naomi and Savannah Channel, Benjamin and Max Brasili, Alexandra, Nick and Emma Spaugh, Zachary Hunter, Olivia, Madeline, Sophia and Isabel Stenson, and Breanna Jordan. Mrs. West retired as Traffic Manager of the Carolinas after 36 years of service with Southern Bell Telephone Company. She was active in the Telephone Pioneers, Seroptomist Club, Forsyth Memorial Hospital Volunteers and served as a past president of the American Legion Auxillary. After retirement she traveled extensively with her great friends, husband, sisters, and children including trips to Hawaii, Europe and the Carribean. She and her husband enjoyed spending their winters with good friends in Key Largo, FL at Anchorage Resort. Mrs. West and her family cherished their annual summer beach trip. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Hayworth-Miller on Silas Creek Parkway. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 18, 2010 at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel, Reverend Ray Burke officiating with interment following at Forsyth Memorial Park.
