Mrs. Mary Kathleen Reavis Weidner, 89, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2009 at Phillips Healthcare Center, Salemtowne Continuing Care Retirement Community, Winston-Salem, Forsyth Couinty, North Carolina. Kathleen was born on August 29, 1920 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina, the eldest child and eldest daughter of Robert L. and Ora (Teague) Reavis. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Louis John Weidner, Jr. and youngest brother Clyde Alfred Reavis. Mrs. Weidner is survived by her daughter Gwyn Heriot and son-in-law James H. Heriot, MD; three grandchildren - Jennifer, James L. and Robert S. Heriot; brother Robert Reavis; and sister Gwyn (Reavis) Little. She was a resident of the Moravian retirement community of Salemtowne for the past nine years and Winston-Salem for the past 26 years. Kathleen was a retired registered nurse and a veteran of WWII. She served as a First Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps, was in the European Theatre soon after the Normandy invasion and deployed as an operating room nurse with the 20th Field Hospital, a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) unit. She was in the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of Germany (Remagen) and provided medical care and comfort to survivors of two Nazi concentration and prisoner of war camps liberated by Allied Forces. Kathleen was promoted to Captain but declined to return to civilian life following the war. She continued to serve as an operating room nurse for the Veteran's Administration in the Los Angeles VA Hospital, California until the birth of her daughter. She remained active in nursing as a part-time American Red Cross volunteer and hospice counselor for the City of Hope in Duarte, California. Her husband Louis was a nuclear power engineer for the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for 38 years and a US Navy veteran of WWII. Upon her husband's retirement as Senior Engineer in 1983, she returned to her home state of North Carolina with Louis to enjoy the golden years and to be closer to family in Statesville. Louis passed away on June 3, 2003 at Salemtowne. Kathleen was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Winston-Salem. Direct private burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3771 Yadkinville Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27106 at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 5, 2009. The will be no family visitation, no memorial and no graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations or memorials may be made to Samaritan's Purse or to the charity of your choice.
