Mrs. Mary Lucille Smoot Sykes, 88, passed away Tuesday, April 02, 2013 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in South Carolina on December 13, 1924 the daughter of the late Thomas and Ada Abernathy Smoot. Mrs. Sykes was heavily involved with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary where she promoted the United States Flag and Veteran awareness. She was instrumental in having a flag raised at Southfork Assisted Living where she was a resident. One of the many things she was proud of was her knitting; she knitted thousands of caps for hospitals, cancer patients, infants and the military. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, B. Reece Sykes and a brother, T.H. Smoot. Mrs. Sykes is survived by three daughters, Donna Sutphin of Pilot Mountain, Becky White of Walkertown and Claudia Baker and husband Carmen of Lexington, 6 grandchildren, Monty Edwards, Russell Edwards, Yvonne White, Matthew Sykes, Alicia Kimes and Andria Collins, 15 great-grandchildren, a sister, Helen Sapp of Winston-Salem and two brothers, Bill Smoot of Georgia and John Smoot of Mocksville. A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Sykes' life will be conducted 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. Joseph Fulk III officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
