WINSTON-SALEM-Mrs. Mary Southern Surratt, 90, of Winston-Salem, completed her life's journey and went home to be with Jesus on Monday, March 31, 2014. Mary was born on November 7, 1923 in Forsyth County to the late Joel Francis Southern and Beulah Lakey Howerton Southern. A life-long resident of Winston-Salem, she graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and worked at Goody's Manufacturing Company before devoting her life to the care and nurturing of her family. Mary was a gifted homemaker, seamstress, and exceptional cook. She enjoyed painting, cake decorating and floral arranging. Perhaps her greatest enjoyment was gardening and landscaping. She presented a showcase of color in every season, but the most beautiful was in spring. Her gardens live on in places everywhere as she freely shared her plantings with friends and strangers who stopped by to appreciate the beauty of her flowerbeds. Mary was a member of Konnoak Baptist Church for over sixty years, serving faithfully in many different ministries. She loved her church family and was greatly blessed by their faithful visitation and acts of kindness as her health declined. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by four brothers, Dallas Lee Southern, Jimmy Southern, Joel Southern and Bill Howerton; and one sister, Esther Stith. Mrs. Surratt is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Thomas Surratt; four children, Joel Surratt (Pam), Mike Surratt (Pacita), Susan Surratt and Jane Surratt; five grandchildren, Mary Surratt, Brian Surratt, Laura Foster, Catherine Cleghorn (Lance) and Thomas Surratt; two great-grandchildren, Isabella Surratt and Mikala Cleghorn; brother-in-law, Julian Stith and many beloved nieces and nephews, including her devoted niece, Karen Southern, whose visits and expressions of love gave her great comfort in her final days. A special thank you as well to her niece, Lynn Lambert, who saw that Mary and her sister, Esther, were able to visit each other frequently in their later years. Funeral services for Mrs. Surratt will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, April 4, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. John Bishop officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Kathy's Kids of Konnoak Baptist Church, 400 McLean Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27127. The family would like to express deep appreciation for the prayers and support from old friends and new, caregivers Teresa Spain, Renee Plott, Sandra Watkins and Sheila Williams; and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
