Mary Barksdale Rice

Mrs. Mary Barksdale Rice, 90, of Winston-Salem died Monday, November 2, 2015 at Brookridge Retirement Community. She was born November 19, 1924 in Greenwood County, SC, the daughter of the late Walter Eugene and Dora Oulla Barksdale. Mrs. Rice was a dedicated Registered Nurse working in the Winston-Salem area for a number of years. She was an avid deep sea fisherwomen and loved the coast. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Dr. Robert Scott Rice, MD of Blacksburg, VA and a daughter, Rosemary Hutchins. Survivors include one son, Robert Scott Rice, Jr. and wife, Karen of Salem, VA; two daughters, Susan Chandler of Freeport, ME and Peggy M. Rice and husband, Sherman of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, April Oettinger of Towson, MD, Kenna Covington and husband, Bryan of Wake Forest, Sarah Rice of Cary, Joanna Rice Pawl of Salem, VA, Stephen Autry of Winston-Salem, and Jerry Autry, Jr. and wife, Toni of Daytona Beach, FL.; seven great grandchildren, Finn Tondru and Rowan Tondru of Towson, MD, Jack Covington of Wake Forest, Josh Hinson of Winston-Salem, Brandon Autry of Deland, FL, and Jenna Autry and Jerry Autry, III of Daytona Beach, FL. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
