Mary Baynes Owen

Mary Lucy Baynes Owen of Winston-Salem departed this life on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the age of 89. She was born September 23, 1923 in Forsyth County, NC, the fourth daughter of W.T. Baynes and Vera Masten Baynes. Growing up in Winston-Salem on Gloria Ave. she attended Trinity Moravian Church and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and Salem College. An active and excellent student, she then graduated from the Cook County School of Nursing in Chicago, IL, and later worked at George Washington University Hospital in Washington D.C. on the Dietary Staff. She married George Owen November 25, 1948 and lived in New Jersey, Chicago and Northern VA while raising children and actively being involved in volunteer work and church programs. In 1973 she and George moved back to Winston-Salem (Davidson County) and provided comfort and help to her aging parents. Always moving on, She helped with the newly formed hospice of Davidson County and the Baptist Hospital, as well as helping at Friedberg Moravian Church where she found comfort for her strong faith. She will be missed by many and loved by those in her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, George M. Owen, parents, W.T. and Vera Baynes, sisters, Eloise Baynes, Eugenia Gordon, Geraldine Eggleston, and many other family and friends. She is survived by her children, Bill Owen of Pamplin, VA; Tom Owen and wife, Carol of Scottsville, VA; Bob Owen and wife, Deborah of Old Town, FL; grandsons, Dan Owen and Jeff Owen and wife, Emily; niece, Janice Walker and husband, Al; Mary Helen Linville and many others. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday January 14, 2013 at Friedberg Moravian Church, with Rev. G. Thomas Shelton and Rev. Jimmy C Newsome, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the church graveyard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
