Mary Gray Richardson Nance

Mrs. Mary Gray Richardson Nance, 96 of Salemtowne, died Friday, August 7, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Nance was born September 15, 1912 in the Benaja Community of Rockingham County, a daughter of the late Joseph T. Richardson and the late Margaret Somers Richardson. She graduated second in her class from Guilford College and taught high school English and French for eleven years before giving up her career to become a full-time mother and homemaker. She served in many civic and community organizations, and was a longtime member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert ""Bob"" Edward Nance, sisters, Myrtle Richardson, and Ethel Cheek, brothers, Lee Richardson, and Robert Richardson. She is survived by her children, Ed Nance, Elizabeth Nance, and Mary Ann Watkins and husband Dr. Edwin Watkins, grandchildren, Amy Toomy, Russell Nance, Kira Koertje, and Susie Watkins, great-grandchildren, Josh Tommy, Megan Toomy, Ethan Koertje, Andrew Koertje and Lulu Nance. A graveside service will be conducted at11:00 AM Tuesday August 12, 2009 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Chaplain Rennie Adcock officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Konnoak Hills Moravian Church Tape Ministry or Hospice and Palliative Care 101 Hospice Lane Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
