Mrs. Mary Atkins McCollum, 92, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Heritage Woods. She was born March 12, 1917 in Surry County to Thomas and Ann Bray Atkins. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, where she sang in the church choir for over forty years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gurnie Payton McCollum (Mac), and by brothers, Claude, Gray and Henry Atkins and sisters, Pearl Either, Nettie Perry, Sarah Spang and Fran Cuthberson. She co-owned Mac's Sales and Service. Surviving are a daughter, Patti McCollum Hill (David) of Wilmington; a son, Michael Payton McCollum, Sr. and fiance, Susie Hicks Love of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Lauren Hill James (Brian), John David Hill, Michael Payton McCollum, Jr. and Anna Porter McCollum; a great granddaughter, Ainsley Grace James; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside servicce will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Forsyth Memorial Park with Dr. Mike Simpson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Monday at First Christian Church on Country Club Road. A memorial service will be held at Heritage Woods at a later date.
