Mary Hunter Smith

Mary Hunter Smith passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on November 12, 1945, in Covington, Virginia, to Roy and Frances Swartz, Hunter grew up in a lively household alongside her older sister, Elizabeth, and twin brothers, Roy and John. As the spirited middle child, she developed an adventurous heart and a quick wit that brought joy and laughter to all who met her.

In 1976, Hunter moved to Winston-Salem, where she built a beautiful life raising her two children, Cathy and Steve. A dedicated mother, she worked as a preschool teacher (to keep an eye on Steve) and was an active classroom volunteer. She also devoted time to the Girl Scouts (to keep an eye on Cathy). Over the years, she had a diverse career, working at NCNB, Piedmont Federal Bank, Hanes Hosiery, and Grainger. In her retirement years she volunteered at Arbor Acres, had fun with the other Red Hat ladies and enjoyed being a part of DAR. No matter where she was, her warm smile and unwavering kindness made a lasting impression.

In 1994, Hunter married William (Bill) Monroe Smith, and together they shared a marriage filled with love, laughter, and adventure. They found joy in antiquing, searching for rustic odds and ends, tobacco paraphernalia, and tending to their beautiful home and yard. Whether traveling across the country or gathering with friends and family, they cherished every moment together. Their home was always filled with stories, laughter, and the warmth of hospitality.

Hunter is survived by her devoted husband, Bill, and her beloved children, Cathy (Mack) and Steve (Melanie). She also leaves behind her brothers, Roy (Wanda) and John (Denise), her brother-in-law Jim (Jean), and her four cherished grandchildren, Grace, Chris, Emily, and William. Her extended family includes many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She has many dear and true friends that she leaves behind. Hunter never met a stranger, if she met you, she loved you, and if you met her, you loved her.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Brookdale South Peace Haven Road and Trellis Supportive Care, as well as her special caregiver, Natalie Hartwick.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 1-3 pm at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville. Bill and the rest of the family will continue to receive visitors at the home of Cathy and Mack from 3pm on. To honor Hunter’s vibrant spirit, guests are encouraged to wear bright and cheerful colors. Her ashes will be spread at a later date in Virginia and at the NC coast.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.

Hunter’s warmth, humor, and boundless love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
