There are so many words to describe Mary Lee Slawterâ¦Strong, Willful, a passion for life, and someone who found joy from being surrounded by family and friends. Mary Lee Slawter was born in Davie County to Bick Howard and Kattie Plott Howard. At an early age Mary Lee Slawter was saved at a Big Tent Revival, and was a charter member at Bixby Church (where she grew up). Her strong faith would help her overcome many challenges she would face in life. One of these challenges was the death of her mother when she was only 2 years old. Preceding the death of her mother Mary Lee and her sister were taken care of by their loving grandparents. Not only did Mary lee learn to take care of herself, but she took much joy in taking care of others. Mary Lee worked sitting with and nursing others until her late eighties. She continued to drive until her late 90's. There seemed to be nothing she couldn't accomplish. Many were bewildered by her strength and passion for life, and the fight she had in her that allowed her to live for 96 years. She always was on the move and enjoyed traveling with her DMA's (Don't Mention Age) and being with her Salem Baptist Church Family. In her final hours she was able to say goodbye to her loved ones and family. Watching her go into the arms of her Lord and Savior was a peaceful moment we all feel grateful to have witnessed. Her final words were ""I'm going to sleep now and waking up in heaven tomorrow"". Mary Lee was preceded in death by first husband, Robert Hilton; second husband, Chester Slawter; daughter in law, Nellie Hilton; parents, Bick and Kattie Plott Howard; Stepmother, Hester Bowmens Howard; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kelley Howard; Sister, Ethel Hilton Benfield; Infant Brother Floyd Howard; brother, Glenn Howard, sister, Barbara Howard.
