Mrs. Mary Charles Painter Hill of Winston-Salem, NC passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 in her home, surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness. She was born on January 13, 1936 in Mt. Holly, NC to Houston and Grace Painter. When she was nine years old, she went to live at NC Baptist Children's Home in Thomasville, NC following the death of her parents. Mary graduated from Thomasville High School. At the Mills Home, she was active in music activities such as choir and piano. She was also a talented athlete where she excelled in softball and was named MVP of the basketball team. Mary is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Claiborne Hill; three daughters, Sharon Henderson (Jeff) of Lexington, Diane Craver (Jeff) of Cary and Kim Phifer (Maurie) of Garner; one son, Mark Hill of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Kari Henderson, Alexandria Phifer, Alianna Phifer, Amaris Phifer, Andre Phifer, Tyler Hill and Ethan Hill. She is also survived by her great Aunt Ruby Toomey of Cary and her sisters-in-law, Joyce Floyd and Dora Hathaway. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bill, Robert and Richard Painter; her sister-in-law, Helen Wilson and her mother and father-in-law, Carlos and Emily Hill of Thomasville. Mary was a beloved and faithful member of Oak Forest United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and sang in the choir. She was also a devoted volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Mary spent 22 years at Midway Elementary School as a Teacher's Assistant and encourager of second grade children in the classroom alongside Ms. Helen Bracey. The family will receive visitors on Friday, April 19 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Oak Forest United Methodist Church Family Life Center in Winston-Salem, NC. The funeral will be held Saturday April 20 at 11:00 am at Oak Forest United Methodist Church. The Reverend Darren Alexander will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oak Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Oak Forest United Methodist Church Building Fund 11461 Old US Highway 52, Winston-Salem, NC 27107 or Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 100 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Hospice and Palliative Care of Winston-Salem and Forsyth Medical Center, 9th floor.
