Mrs. Mary Lillian Haynes Dalton of Lewisville, Route 1 (West Bend Community), passed away at Arbor Acres on Sunday, February 13, 2011. Mary was born on May 18, 1920 to Gladys Jones Haynes and James Franklin Haynes. She maintained residence in the Lewisville and Winston-Salem area until her death. In 1940 she graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College, (ASU) with a B. S. degree in Education cum laude. In 1960 she completed work leading to Graduate Certification In Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N. C. In 1968 she received a Master's Degree in Education cum laude from Western Carolina University. She served public schools from Murphy to Denton as school teacher, school librarian, reading teacher and curriculum coordinator. For twenty years she taught in the King Elementary School, in King, NC. (Stokes County). Mary had been active in the United Methodist Church since college days and had held offices at district, conference and jurisdictional levels. In 1980 and in 1984 she was elected a delegate to the General Conference of the United Methodist Church. For four years she was secretary to the Appalachian Development Committee of the United Methodist Church, a jurisdictional and regional organization. She served eight years on the Conference Board of Church and Society, eight years on the Conference Board of Global Ministries, and four years on the Conference Committee on Nominations.. Mary was a selected participant in travel study seminars sponsored by the Women's Division, Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church to Cuernavaca, Mexico; to Kenya and Tanzania, Africa; to Israel, Jordan, West Bank, Gaza, Syria and Egypt in the Middle East; and to the USSR. She was known throughout the Western North Carolina Conference for her outstanding work as a mission interpreter and was a frequent workshop leader and speaker in the area of mission in local churches and district events of the conference. She taught in the Schools of Mission of United Methodist Women in six different conferences of the Southeastern Jurisdiction. She was a member of Stokes County Retired School Personnel Division of North Carolina Association of Educators, Yadkin County Historical Association, Lewisville Historical Association, and she enjoyed her work for several years as precinct judge at Unity Moravian Church voting site in Lewisville. During her fifteen years at Arbor Acres, Mary gave of her time and energy to the Arbor Acres Library and was happy to find each reader just the right book. Mary is listed in Who's Who of American Women, Fifth Edition 1968-89. She is predeceased by her husband, the Rev. George W. Dalton, and a brother, Kenneth C. (Casey) Haynes, and survived by a brother, J. Lawrence Haynes of East Bend and a sister, Anne Haynes Jenkins of Raleigh, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, February 16, at 2:30 PM at Arbor Acres Retirement Community Fellowship Hall, Winston-Salem with Rev. Douglas Suggs, Community Chaplain, and David Piner, Director of Arbor Acres officiating. Burial will be in the Union United Methodist Church Cemetery, Shallowford Road, West Bend Community, Wednesday, February 16, at 11:00 AM. The family appreciates the kindness and care Mary received from staff and employees of Arbor Acres.
