Mary Elizabeth Cowen

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cowen, 81, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 4, 1927 in Greensboro, the daughter of the late Lacy Haithcock, Sr. and Mary Shepherd Haithcock. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Cowen, her brother, Lacy Haithcock, Jr. and her sister, Betty Butler. Mom enjoyed cooking, traveling and being with her family and friends. Survivors include two daughters, Sonya Cowen Newton and Kim Mabes and husband, Henry; two sons, Fred Cowen III and wife, Kay and Chris Cowen and wife, Frances; grandchildren, David Newton, Benjamin Cowen, Michael Cowen, Cristian Cowen, Shawn Cowen and wife, Nora and Brian Mabes; two great grandchildren, Daniel Cowen and Hannah Cowen; one sister, Pat Henderson and husband, Aubrey; and one brother, Jack Haithcock and wife, Helen. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 pm at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends Saturday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
