Mrs. Mary Sue Smith Chapman, 80, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2022, at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. She was born in Stokes Co. on December 3, 1941, the daughter of the late Harvey Thorton Smith and Grace Angeline Branscome Smith. Mrs. Chapman retired from Wellington Industries, was a substitute teacher for many years and volunteered with Mountain Valley Hospice. She was a longtime member of Brim’s Grove Baptist Church and was very active in her community, as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Chapman was a devoted mother, caring grandmother and great-grandmother and deeply enjoyed her friendships. She enjoyed working in her garden, crafts, and painting. Her faith in Christ carried her through many struggles in life, as we know faith will carry friends and family for the days to come. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Chapman, Sr. and an infant brother. Mrs. Chapman is survived by two sons, James “Jim” Gray Pell, Sr. (Lisa) of Pilot Mountain and Timothy “Tim” S. Pell (Debbie) of Springfield, MO; two step-daughters, Patricia Chapman and Marsha Boan (Tim) both of Statesville; a step-son, John Chapman (Gail) of Catawba; 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022, at Brim’s Grove Baptist Church, 3509 NC-268, Pilot Mountain with Pastor Dean Barley and Rev. Gerald Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 prior to the service at the church.
