Mary Louise Crews Arrington

ARRINGTON WINSTON-SALEM - Mrs. Mary Louise Crews Arrington passed away Thursday, June 02, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 14, 1922 in Forsyth County to the late Lonnie William Crews and Jennie Crews Grubbs. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Arrington was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Randolph Arrington; and two brothers, Thurmond and Bill Crews. Surviving are her daughter, Betty Catherine Chetty (Chamroen); two sons, Doug Arrington (Sheila) and Don Arrington (Cherie); four grandchildren, Samuel, Sarah, Seth and Joshua. A Funeral Service will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2011 at New Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Peter Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Mom was always smiling, optimistic, kind and forgiving. She grew up during The Depression, which were hard times, but all her memories were the fun and love of her family. Even today, she could still recite funny poems she enjoyed from her school days and verse after verse of ""The Highwayman"" 75 years after she memorized it while watching the cows. She married Dad soon after the end of WWII and she was totally devoted to him. We didn't think she could survive my dad's passing after 63 years of marriage, but she surprised us with her strength and faith. She dedicated herself to helping us and kept us in chocolate pound cakes, school fudge, muscadine jelly, meat loaves and whatever else we wanted. Saturdays continued to be Super-Scrabble nights. She made funny words and bingos to beat her game-shark grandchildren. She also loved eating out with her friends, and she treasured each of them. Mom also loved wildflowers, and before it was fashionable to be environmentally conscious, she reclaimed a section of woods near her house and made a restart for the mayflowers, trillium, bloodroot and columbine (her favorite) that have now overgrown the paths she made. She saw something beautiful in every humble flower and weed. For over 30 years, she experimented with what flowers would press well and keep their color and used the flowers to make incredible pressed cards and pictures. We think our Mom and Dad gave us the most special childhood anyone ever had. Mom decorated birthday piano cakes and racecar cakes, and holidays were all magic. She loved us to pieces, and her loss to us is indescribable. There are no words to say how much we will miss her.
