Marvin Francis Hansley, Sr.

In the wee hours of Monday, February 3, 2025, Marvin Francis Hansley, Sr. passed away at the age of 90. 

He was born on August 20, 1934, to the late Joseph Daniel and Florence Isabel Ottaway Hansley in Onslow County, Swamp Sound - better known as Sneads Ferry, NC. He was the knee baby and last surviving of seven children, Lela Mae (Gurganus), Fred, Hubert, Linwood, E.T., and Norman.

Striving for a better life, Marvin followed his brothers to Winston-Salem where he met his wife Mary Love Pope. They were married for seventy-one years and raised their seven children in the Moravian faith at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, Marlene Kay, Marvin Jr ”Sonny”, Mary Frances, Miranda Louise (husband David Vaden), and Maria Florance (Jo).

He was preceded in death by his children, Michael, Sr (November 25, 2000) and Marcia Ann October 17, 2021); and grandson, Joshua.

Also surviving are ten grandchildren, Matthew, Joe, Marvin III, Elizabeth, Melinda, Michael, Jr, Cody, Rebekah, and Robert; and eleven great-grandchildren.

His first job in Winston-Salem was delivering cola for Zimbo Bottling. Eventually following his brothers to Bahnson Company where he made a career as a foreman then supervisor; but when their doors closed, a window opened by the trades he had learned from the time he was a young boy working on their farmland where he built most of their family home by himself at the young age of thirteen. He continued his passion for building that led to home repairs, then renovating one home at a time to eventually form Hansley Rentals.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 7, 2025, in the New Philadelphia Moravian Church Graveyard - God's Acre, with a reception following in the church Banquet room.
