Martha Moretz Wellman

Martha Moretz Wellman, 90, died Wednesday April 6, 2011 at Greystone Cottage in Bermuda Village surrounded by family and friends. She was born February 22, 1921 in Hickory to Joseph Alfred and Elizabeth Maude Moretz, youngest of their 8 children. Martha Wellman was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church. She graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1940 with a degree in primary education. During World War II she served as an air traffic controller in Memphis, Tennessee. She married Henry (Hank) M. Wellman, Jr., a career Marine Corps officer, in 1944. For 30 years Hank and Martha lived a service couples life in North Carolina, California, Virginia, Chile, Maryland, and Hawaii. Following her husbands retirement in 1966 they moved to Chicago, Illinois where they lived for 18 years. They came home to North Carolina in 1985. Through the years Martha was a faithful wife, mother, homemaker, and leader in her many communities, churches, and in multiple Marine Corps wives organizations. She is survived by a sister, Josephine Lauerman of Bermuda Village; three Children, Jane Wellman Egger and husband Tate of Seattle, WA, Henry M. Wellman III, and wife Karen Lind and Vincent A. Wellman and wife Margaret Walsh, all of Ann Arbor, MI and six grandchildren, Deke Egger, USN, Graham Egger, Ned Wellman, Daniel Wellman, Laura Wellman & Patrick Wellman. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 16th at 2:00 p.m. at the Bermuda Village Living Room, 142 Bermuda Village. Rev. Ray Burke of Clemmons Moravian Church will officiate. A reception will follow at Bermuda Village. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to either the Clemmons Moravian Church building fund, PO Box 730, Clemmons, NC, 27012-0730 or to Hospice of Davie, 377 Hospital St., Suite 103, Mocksville, NC, 27028.
