Martha Rebecca Fleming Edmondson

Mrs. Martha Rebecca Fleming Edmondson, 83, of Winston-Salem died Friday, December 5, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 22, 1925 in Greensboro, the daughter of the late Robert Andrew Fleming, Sr. and Mary Cottrell Fleming. She was active in several churches over the years as leader of youth groups, children's choir and Sunday school teacher. She was presently a member of Faith United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Tom Nail Class and the United Methodist Women. She graduated from Greensboro College with an A. B. Degree and taught kindergarten and elementary grades in North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia. She was a Girl Scout leader for ten years with Brownie and Junior troops and was a volunteer for nine years at Arbor Acres with the Critter Cuddlin' program. In 1989 she was ""Critter Cuddler"" of the year for the Forsyth Humane Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Gilliam Edmondson, Jr., her son-in-law, Paul M. Vernon, Jr. and her faithful companion, ""Gizmo"". Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca E. ""Becky"" Choplin and husband, Wayne and Elizabeth E. ""Betsy"" Vernon of Pfafftown; two grandsons, Donald Paul Vernon of Pfafftown and Michael W. Choplin and wife, Cassidy of Conover; one granddaughter, Sara C. Atkins and husband, Kenneth of Lexington; three great grandchildren, Kenneth O. Atkins, Blakeley E. Atkins and William M. Choplin; two brothers, Robert A. Fleming, Jr. and wife, Cecile and Michael B. Fleming. Martha was also survived by her close friend, Joan W. Vernon. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 6:00 P.M. Monday, December 8, 2008 at Faith United Methodist Church in Rural Hall with Rev. Evelyn M. Lemons officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the Church. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Church Relay for Life Fund, 1645 Griffin Road, Rural Hall, NC 27045.
