Marshall Gordon Cheek passed away peacefully on March 7, 2023 after a brief illness. He was born on January 25, 1940 in McColl, South Carolina to Earl & Clara Bullard Cheek. He graduated from McColl-Fletcher Memorial High School in 1958 and attended Presbyterian Junior College. He worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. before returning home to South Carolina. He married his high school sweetheart, Edna McCormick on August 11, 1961. Marshall was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea from 1962-64. He was a founding member of the McColl Rescue Squad and was active until moving away from his hometown. He also served as Mayor of the Town of McColl. Marshall worked in the textile industry for over 40 years, having the opportunity to travel the United States and the world as an expert in his field of dyeing and finishing. He retired from Ciba in 2003.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He enjoyed spending time at his and Edna’s second home on Oak Island. Marshall was a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge in McColl and was active in the Kernersville Civitan Club. He was a 30-year member of the Gamecock Club and enjoyed attending University of South Carolina football games with his family.
Marshall was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edna of Kernersville; son Marc, daughter-in-law Michele, and granddaughter Mallory of Raleigh; daughter Amy, son-in-law Brian, granddaughter Emma of Kernersville; grandson Thomas, his wife Alyssa; sister Edna Stock, her husband Dave of McColl, SC; sister Elaine Hudson, her husband Dale of Brazoria, Texas; sister-in-law Beth Stone and niece Jessie Stone of Columbia, SC; nephew Kiah Stone and family of Charleston, SC and sister-in-law Edith Lewis of North Myrtle Beach, SC.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home of Winston-Salem or Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 18 at 12:30-1:45 PM at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM, with military honors immediately following.
