Marjorie Smith Hedgepeth

Marjorie Smith Hedgepeth, 89, of Tarboro, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away on January 6, 2015. She was a resident of The Fountains at the Albermarle Retirement Center, after moving there in 2012 from Heritage Woods Retirement Home in Winston-Salem, where she had lived since 2006. Marjorie was born in Macon, GA on March 2, 1925 and grew up in Marshville, NC. She was the only daughter of the late Lonnie C. Smith and Faye Little Smith Lee. She graduated in 1945 from East Carolina Teachers College and moved to Winston-Salem to teach Home economics in the Forsyth County School System at Sedge Garden High School. In addition to Sedge Garden High School, during her 17 year teaching career, she taught at Sedge Garden Elementary, Glenn High School, and later Glenn Junior High, Old Town School, and Kernersville Junior High, retiring in 1970 from the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County System. Marjorie was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church for 51 years. She taught adult women's Sunday School for over 40 years. In 2006, she became a member of Ardmore Baptist Church. Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James (Jim) Archie Hedgepeth in 2011. She is survived by a daughter, Faye Hedgepeth Price (Jerry) of Tarboro, granddaughters, Sara Frances Price of Raleigh, Ellen Price Lewis (Hunter) and great-granddaughters, Frances and Smith Lewis of Mountain Brook, AL. A celebration of Marjorie's life will take place on Friday, January 9, at 11:00 AM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rescue Mission, 717 Oak St., Winston-Salem, NC 27107 or to the Salvation Army, 130-A Stratford Ct., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or the charity of choice.
