Marion "Sonny" Whitener, Jr.

Walkertown- Mr. Marion “Sonny” Chambers Whitener, Jr. passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born January 8, 1930, in Forsyth County, the son of the late Marion C. Whitener and Alice Ledford Whitener. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church. Sonny enjoyed spending his time with his lake family at Tuckertown Lake and hanging out with friends at the Pawn Shop, Milk Bar, and Little Creek Diner. He was loved by all and a friend to everyone he met.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Nellie Love Whitener as well as four sisters. Surviving are his daughters, Donna Whitener of Winston-Salem, Wendy Rierson and husband Randy of Walnut Cove, and Gina Cooper and husband Todd of Lexington; grandchildren, Robbie, Rebekah, Ryan and Mason; special friend Doris Dennis; sisters-in-laws Lucy Reich, Delphia Reid, and Joyce Ann Love; and brother-in-law Tommy Love.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Lou Anne Flynt and Karen Myers for their kind assistance in caring for “Mr. Sonny”. Per our father’s request, there will be no memorial service at this time.

Memorials may be directed to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
