Marie Layne Shelton

Shelton Mrs. Marie Layne Shelton of Winston-Salem, went to be with the Lord on June 30, 2012 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a four month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Danville, VA to Edna Power Layne and James William Layne, Sr. She married her high school sweetheart, R. William ""Bill"" Shelton, Sr., who preceded her in death after 54 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, a brother, James W. Layne, Jr. preceded her to Heaven. Marie was instrumental in establishing a Christian Women's Club ministry in this area, serving in many capacities, eventually as Area Representative. She enjoyed working behind the scenes and participating in choir, Gideons Auxiliary, and blood drives, just to name a few. Her family will remember how she loved roller coasters, her Red Hat and birthday groups, the clothes she made for them, and her love of chocolate. They will reminisce about girls' trips, family vacations, and times spent talking and laughing around the dinner table - long after the meal was over. She collected shoes, angels, shoes, bunnies, and shoes. Generous in giving and serving, she inspired devotion in her family and loyalty in her friends. Marie is survived by her children, Ben Shelton; Shannon Maloney; Susie (Roger) Trivette; Shelley (David) Ledbetter; her grandchildren Kelley and Jess Maloney; Erin (John) Gough; Ashley (Eric) King; and Maria, Lindy, and Ivey Ledbetter; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mozelle Lineberry; and two brothers, Charles Layne and Donald (Margie) Layne. She also leaves behind two best friends, Ann Scott and Rosalee Moore. We are forever grateful for their love and care for our mother and for us. A funeral service will be conducted 3:00 pm Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family expresses gratitude to and memorials may be made to KBR Hospice Home and the WFU Cancer Center, as well as to Gideon's International and Calvary Baptist Church. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
