Clemmons-Mrs. Marie Evelyn May Poindexter, 82, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born on July 4, 1929 in Yadkin County to the late Henry Elmon May, Sr. and Martha Todd May. Marie graduated from Clemmons High School. She attended Bethesda Moravian Church in Winston-Salem where she became a member in 1942 and taught Sunday school. As a former member of Mt. Carmel Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, she taught Sunday school and played the piano for the children's choir. Marie is a current member of Clemmons Moravian Church. She taught several different ages in Sunday school, assisted with Vacation Bible School, and played the piano for the children's choir. She has served as Head Diener, Diener, been a loyal member of Circle #1 Woman's Fellowship and took birthday cakes, bingo prizes, and balloons to Salemtowne Moravian Community. Marie has worked for Western Electric and the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System at Southwest Middle School in the cafeteria where she was known as the ""Hot Dog Lady"" for making all the chili served at the school. She worked and retired from Gravely Tractor Inc. in Clemmons. After retirement, she worked for her son's company, Marven L. Poindexter Plumbing along with her husband. During this time, she also was a volunteer at Clemmons Elementary School, a quilter at Clemmons First Baptist Church Quilting Ministry and went to local nursing homes with her sister, Joan Cress to provide a music program for several years. Marie was a wonderful cook, loved her family dearly and enjoyed family coming home for dinners and ""just getting together."" She made and decorated cake squares for numerous family birthdays, baby, and bridal showers. Mrs. Poindexter enjoyed going to the beach, mountains, and just being with her husband, family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all. Her hobbies include sewing for herself and others, making doll clothes, reading her bible, arranging flowers, and going to yard sales. Her family enjoyed her fruitcakes, chicken stew, and Pig Picking cakes. She met the love of her life at the age of 12 at Clemmons School, Bobby L. Poindexter. She never dated anyone else. They were married April 10, 1948 after his military service in WWII and have enjoyed 63 years of a loving wonderful marriage. Preceding her in death were two sons, Marven Lee Poindexter (June 2005), Gary Dean Poindexter (April 2008), son-in-law, Earl Winston Clopton (Sept. 2005), and grandson, Robert Adam Poindexter, Sr. (Nov. 2006). Surviving are her loving husband, Bobby Lee Poindexter of the home; daughter, Martha Carole Clopton of Lewisville; grandchildren, R. Wayne Hege, Jr. (Martha) of Winston-Salem, Christopher D. Hege (Christine) of Lewisville, Lisa M. Poindexter of Thomasville, Michelle L. Poindexter of Asheville, and Matt L. Poindexter (Kara) of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Josh Myers, Jayla Myers, Robert Adam Poindexter, Jr., Charlie Burke, Raistlin Leath, and Hudson and Chase Poindexter; step grandchildren, Winn Clopton, Florida Lynn O'Donnell (Dan) of Fredericks, Maryland, Kayla Hege (fiancé, Corey Sprinkle) of Winston-Salem and Abe and Hope Edwards of Winston-Salem; step-great grandchildren, Natalie O'Donnell, Riley O'Donnell and Riley Paige Sprinkle; daughter-in-law, Candy Poindexter of Winston-Salem, brother Rev. Dr. Henry E. May (Bobbie) of Yadkinville; sister, Joan Cress (Ray) of Advance and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Clemmons Moravian Church with Rev. Q. Ray Burke, Rev. Dr. Henry E. May, and Mr. Mark Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
