Marie Dawson Leonard

Emma Marie Leonard, known to her loved ones as Marie, peacefully passed away on July 5, 2023, in Winston Salem, NC, at the age of 79. She was born on December 1, 1943, in Hurt, VA, to her late parents, Henry Wilson Dawson and Annie Elizabeth Watson Dawson.

Marie will fondly be remembered for her passion for giving to others, love for her grandchildren and her arts and crafts. She had a creative spirit that shone through her beautiful creations which brought joy to those around her. Whether it was stringing beads, knitting, or sewing, Marie poured her heart into every project she undertook. There is nothing that brought her more joy than spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Marie is survived by her beloved family, including her children, Mark Leonard, Barry Leonard (Tina), Steven Leonard (Rebecca), Daughter-in-law Paula Leonard and Siblings, Charlie Dawson (Linda), Martha Shelton, Lynn Dawson (Lisa), and Lonnie Dawson. Grandchildren, Amber Peoples, Amanda Leonard (Shepherd), Sarah Leonard, Jacob Leonard, and Skylar Hutchens. Great grandchildren, Elleanna Peoples, Jacob Peoples and McKenzie Shepherd. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends who were touched by her kindness, creativity, and warm personality.

Marie was preceded in death by her siblings, Barbara Ann Wade, Dolly Berrier and Ab Dawson.

Although she is no longer with us, Marie's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

The family would like to send a special thank you to Becky Sides Robertson (and family) who opened her place of business and heart to our mom for over 30 years. We would also like to thank the staff at South Fork Assisted Living for caring for our mother for the last 3 years. Also, to Trellis Supportive Care for comforting her in the last days of her life.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Marie's life will be held at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel in Lewisville, NC, on July 14, 2023, 11:30am, with Dr. Paul Mullen officiating. Friends and loved ones are invited to join to honor and remember Marie's remarkable life.
