Marie Townsend Butler

Marie Townsend Butler, 90, of Bermuda Village, Advance, N.C. died Friday, August 15, 2014.
She was born June 20, 1924 in Marlboro County, S.C. to Mary Rogers Townsend and John R. Townsend. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, James Preston Butler ,a son, John W. Butler and a grandson, Charles P. Butler. Before retirement at Bermuda Village, Marie was a 35 year resident of Fayetteville, N.C. where she was an active member of Highland Presbyterian Church. Marie and J.P. also spent time on Figure Eight Island, N.C. and at High Meadows, Roaring Gap, N.C. where they enjoyed vacation homes and the company of many friends.
Marie attended Marlboro County schools and was a graduate of Winthrop University. As a young woman she enjoyed working in the field of journalism where she found varied and interesting work assignments from the small towns of North Carolina to Washington, D.C. . Acquiring her pilot's license at age 18, Marie flew with the Civil Air Patrol during World War II. She was active in forming the family business, Butler Electric Supply, Inc. in 1948. For Marie and her husband, retirement years were filled with numerous trips throughout the world as well as special trips, visiting friends and family.
Mrs. Butler is survived by her children, Mr. Ben Butler of Myrtle Beach (Vicki), Mr. James Butler of Wilmington, N.C., Mr. Carlos Butler of Greensboro (Kelly); eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 2pm, Sunday, August 17, 2014, at the chapel, Bermuda Village, Advance, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Lake Waccamaw Home for Boys and Girls, P.O. Box 250, Lake Waccamaw, N.C. 28450.
